Formerly known as the American Republic until 2011. The name comes from the owners of the steel mill, Republic Steel.

The Great Republic is a self-unloading bulk carrier, designed to haul taconite pellets (iron ore concentrate) on the Great Lakes.
The Great Republic was originally designed to maneuver on the winding Cuyahoga River and remains today as one of the maneuverable ships in the world.
Still in operation today, it primarily sails between Lorain, Ohio, and Cleveland, Ohio, navigating the Cuyahoga River.
In 1996, the Olympic Flame was carried about the Great Republic as it traveled from Detroit, MI to Cleveland, OH.
